Did You Know?

Is laser hair removal permanent?
In most cases, laser hair reduction is permanent, but due to FDA standards, practitioners must say reduction for such cases that some or little hair does come back. There are 65 hair follicles in 1 square inch of skin which grow at different times. After hair reduction series, there may be some, if any, hair that may have been dormant during treatment that would recur, but we will work with patients to eliminate that as well.

How does it work?
To eliminate hair, the laser emits gentle pulses of energy that pass through the skin to the hair follicle. This energy is then absorbed into the hair follicle to destroy it so that hair can never grow there again. Lasers target color, water and blood (spider veins) so the darker the hair the better result.

Am I a candidate for laser hair reduction?
Laser hair removal can be applied to all areas of the body and all types of skin (even dark or tanned). White hair, grey hair and red hair are not good candidates because the laser targets color and these hair colors are very light so the laser cannot see the color.

Does it hurt?
The treatment causes only minimal discomfort. Patients often say it feels similar to the snap of a rubber band. Slight redness or localized swelling can occasionally occur, but this usually subsides within the first 24 hours after treatment.

How many treatments are required?
Typically patients will see results in 6-10 treatments, though this number will vary based upon skin tone, hair color and several other factors. Your doctor or practitioner will talk to you about variables that may affect your individual results.

What is the price of laser hair reduction?
The price of laser hair reduction depends upon the area that is to have laser treatment. An upper lip is going to be less than full legs. A consultation with one of our healthcare providers will evaluate the areas desired for hair removal and prices are then quoted.

What treatments are offered for acne sufferers?
There are several treatments and cosmoceutical lines (physician prescribed) that Elysian offers. Most acne treatments begin with a consultation to evaluate active acne or acne scarring. The process then goes to weekly or bimonthly chemical peels and microdermabrasions to remove excess skin cells and promote a healthier base skin. During this time, the patient is often encouraged to use certain acne products to continue the treatment at home between office visits. After active acne is under control and healing, then laser treatment is used to eliminate the redness that has formed under active acne and the scarring that sometimes occurs with acne sufferers. This procedure includes microdermabrasion, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and Excellapure Skin Care products used along with a special silicone mask. This forces toxins in the dermis to rise to the epidermis in the form of perspiration. Call our office for more information about this amazing treatment. It is not only used for acne, but for aging skins, scars, hyperpigmentation, edema and stretch marks.

What procedure is there for reducing acne scars and how does it help?
Chemical peels and microdermabrasions are recommended to help alleviate scaring which promote the acceleration the production of new skin. The Cynosure laser Affirm also is used to help reduce scarring by helping to stimulate collagen production and promote tissue tightening in scarred area.

What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are topically applied acids that aid in the restoration and rejuvenation of the skin’s surface. They create a uniform and controlled shedding of several layers of the skin. Depending on the nature and depth of the peel, a significant number of layers can be exfoliated allowing new growth to be exposed, creating a fresh vibrant appearance. Chemical peels can enhance your appearance by reducing blotchy and uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, freckling, age spots, sun-damaged skin, and acne scars in a relatively brief measure of time. Chemical peels accelerate the production of new cells. Enjoy fresh smooth skin-immediately after your first treatment.

What are the different types of chemical peels you offer?
Elysian offers superficial and medium peels. Superficial peels are designed to help smooth coarse, dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, and even out skin tone. The recovery is generally rapid and usually involves some minor flaking. A series of treatments is ordinarily recommended to obtain the desired result over a period of time. Typically there is no down time and with appropriate sun protection, you can resume regular activities immediately. A medium peel contains a stronger potency of acids. Medium peels target the epidermis and upper dermis and cause the skin to slough within 5-7 days. Immediately after treatment the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day the skin turns brown in color and after 3-4 days the skin initiates the peeling process.

What Is a Microdermabrasion?
A microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, exfoliating procedure used to remove the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin). This procedure can be performed individually or in a series, for revitalizing and maintaining the skin’s appearance and smoothness. It can be used to address problems on the face or body. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic. One session generally takes 30 minutes or less. There is no special preparation needed prior to the visit, nor any recuperation after. Microdermabrasions, chemical peels, facials and the proper skin care products help in reducing pore size and preventing and getting rid of blackheads.

What are some of the medicines you offer for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation?
Dermal Fillers: Radiesse, Juvederm Ultra, and Juvederm Ultra XC.

Juvederm Ultra & Juvederm Ultra XC: These are natural and safe dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Results may last up to 6 months to a year.

Botox is a therapeutic muscle relaxing agent. It is non-surgical and a physician administered treatment that can be used to smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. It visibly corrects signs of stress and aging. Results can last up to 6 months or longer.

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers:
Q: Are aesthetic injectable products safe?
A: These fillers have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning that clinical data on their safety and effectiveness were reviewed by the FDA prior to approval.

Q: How much do aesthetic-injectable treatments cost?
A: Cost varies based on a number of factors; such as your specific problem area, or the amount of injectable that may be required. A personal consolation is likely required to determine what might work best in every individual situation. Juvederm Ultra/ XC typically costs $525.00 per syringe, and Radiesse costs $750.00. Elysian does occaisionally offer special discounts on dermal fillers and other injectables, so please be sure to call for consultation and pricing.

Q: Will the results look natural?
A: Fillers can enhance the way you look. Physicians often will use multiple products, depending on the patients needs. Botox is often used to relax the dominant frown muscles between the eyebrows, allowing the 2 vertical lines between the brows, to temporarily diminish in appearance. The dermal fillers work differently by instantly filling in and smoothing out wrinkles and folds that look like the parentheses along the side of your nose and mouth, creating a smooth, natural look and feel.

Q: Will my insurance cover the cost of injectable treatments?
A: Insurance providers do not typically cover cosmetic procedures.

Q: How many syringes will I need of dermal filler at my first visit?
A: It depends on what areas you desire to be filled. It may take one for nasolabial folds and then another if the lips are to be done. On your consultation, it can be determined as to how many will be needed.

Frequently asked questions about Botox:
Q: How does Botox work?
A: Botox is approved to treat 20 different conditions in more than 75 countries worldwide and has been approved in the US for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. A: Usually the average cost is $12.00 per unit and 4 units are used per injection with an average of 4-5 injections per area. Elysian does run specials on Botox so please call or check the website for discounts.

Elysian offers two types of treatment for vein treatment in the legs and face. 1) The first treatment is sclerotherapy. This treatment is usually performed on the lower extremities. During the treatment, a sclerosing agent, such as hypertonic saline, is injected into the vein through a tiny needle. The solution replaces the blood in the vein generating irritation and ultimately corrosion to the vessel walls. The body then starts a natural healing process and the vein begins to decompose, shrink and eventually disappear. Depending on the number of veins being treated in any given session treatment can last from 15 to 45 minutes. 2) The second treatment is with the laser. The laser is used on most facial veins and specific leg veins. The cosmetic laser emits a prescribed dose to energy to the vein. The laser “selectively” targets the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. After treatment, the vessel will naturally disappear. Typically one or two treatments are required and results can be seen in 3-4 weeks. Treatment time usually varies between 10-20 minutes depending on size of area treated.

Stretch marks are difficult to get rid of, but they can be decreased and often lightened with different treatments. One treatment is the laser, Affirm, which stimulates collagen production to help decrease stretch marks. This may take between 4-6 treatments.
